What do you think it is?
Personally going to choose the birth of Rock'n'Roll back in the 50's. That's where it all started and was such a breakthough for its time considering most of the better rock n roll artists were black, and the amount of racism in America and over the world back then was hideous. Yes most of the songs where 3 chords and samey but in my opinion nobody has beat the passion and drive that those songs had. Plus they've standed the test of time.

African music, most of the greatest genres in the modern day can trace their roots back to it.
Kinda makes the MOBO's look slightly pompous and narrow minded if you think about it too hard.

Sorry to go a bit pretentious but surely the invention of counter melody must be up there...

This was deemed to be so special and magical by the Pope that it couldn't be heard out of the Vatican walls and was only sung twice a year on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The only reason it got out was because a talented 14 year old heard it, went away and transcribed the whole piece and only returned for minor corrections!! That 14 year old was Mozart...

theres 2 great ones i lived through and got caught up with personally:
1st being grunge/US alt rock (90-92) - before this we had to put up with shite like Poison/Warrant/Tigertailz and other shite hair metal bands. Suddenly it was cool to like guitar music again
2nd is dance/rave (92 - 03 era) - has to be the best era where 'gig go-ers' all loved each other, no attitude or ego, everyone was fit as a fiddle through dancing non stop all night, fit women wearing next to nothing, i spent 6 years teetotal and never gave it a 2nd thought. oh and the music was inspirational.
but yeah, anyone over the age of 35 would say the 50's birth of rock n roll
