Funny that cause i was watching Saving Private Ryan the other day and thought to myself "hmm has Dale seen this?" Yeah ok, you aint a fan of WW2 genre, but man the direction of this film (action scenes) is just amazing same goes for the cinematography. The story is pretty lame to be honest, but it really doesnt matter (for once) the realism of the battle scenes make up for it. It's the film that made me want to make films. Schindlers List is another fecking GREAT movie. Its not a "war movie" its just set in the war. Its actually about a business man and how he builds up a business from nothing by using Jews. Both a must see.
Only one common fault between both.....Neither star Gary Busey!

wow i'm opposite, not the old 'classic' stuff our Dads would watch but certainly the newer ones
the opening sequence to saving private ryan is worth watching alone. closest you or i would get to experience what our grandfathers did
never watched any 'marvel' super hero type films, superman aside

Older films have much more story and plot (most of the time) as they didn't rely on effects as much as films do today. For example (as we've talked about SPR), "The Longest Day" which is also based around D Day like SPR. However its a much better "film" as it covers the actual events from every angle, and is a massive production. I think every male film star (American/British/German) around in 62 is in that film somewhere. Really does give you a feel of how big D DAY actually was. I love SPR for the direction and action scenes, but as a story telling film it doesnt come near its older rival.

I don't really understand that. History is fascinating, it teaches us so much about our lives today. I'm really into 20th century history, particularly the two major wars.
Old British films were the best in the world, both from a cinematic point of view and a historical point of view. Even when the films were made with more of a 'propagandist' slant you could relate that to the reality of the times.
However, if you want history DON'T watch anything made by the Americans - with a few notable exceptions (Saving Private Ryan being one of them, and ONLY because of the opening sequences), the Americans don't do history, full stop. American film makers treat history with an appalling disregard for fact, sometimes even re-writing the historical fact to suit what they want to achieve (U52 being a prime example).
WW2 is a really fascinating subject that can be both horrific and inspirational at the same time.
Without an understanding of history, you can't possibly understand the present - let alone have any kind of idea what the future might hold.

I'm the same with dale on schindler's list and top gun, but you can throw in films such as the godfather, ben hur, casablanca, easy rider, gone with the wind, apocalypse now, citizen kane, it's a wonderful life, vertigo, rebel without a cause, one flew over the cuckoo's nest (which i own but have never got around to watching), taxi driver (which i started watching and got bored of), raging bull, too many to mention really
The good thing about sky+ though is i am starting to catch up, i just record films i haven't seen and go through them. I hadn't seen goodfellas until recently, same with jerry maguire, sky+ fucking rules

He should take a trip to France to see the WW1 and WW2 sites. That'll wake him up. It's still heart warming the amount of respect is paid to soldiers on both sides.

Been there and seen them.
Just because it doesn't interest me doesn't mean i don't know my history, believe it or not i did pay attention at school and i listened to all my Grandads and Grandmas stories. Maybe that's why i'm not interested nowdays, over saturation.

my favourite parts of trainspotting are where he travels through the toilet and when he's going cold turkey and see's the baby crawling along the ceiling.

I do own schindlers list, but i'm never in the right mood for it, and I own psycho, but I keep thinking it'll be too scary for me (I really am a lame ass scaredy cat). Other than that I like the fact i've never seen star wars, it gives me one interesting fact to tell people about at least, and I got bored of lord of the rings books so can't be fecked watching them too
