being an ex rasta i'm torn but gonna have to go with the beatles, still they are the pinnacle of what a band can achieve and great songs/image/marketability. although reckon it would have been much easier back in their day, do you think they'd make it today?

I think they would have but not at the scale that they did back then..... however i think Bob Marley and The Wailers would be just as inspirational if they came out tomorrow.

I have 100% respect for the beatles as songwriters but nothing else really.......

so its bob marley on the basis of lyrics and the fact that he has more soul in his voice than lennon and macartney put together

his lyrics have helped people for generations

the beatles were simply to cheesy for me to fall in love with, the take that of the 60s

course i can see how they changed the way music is writtern and produced, but it dont mean everyone has to like them.

they wrote bad lyrics and they had weak souless voices.....so i dont think they are the best band ever on that basis.

i reckon the best band ever should tick most boxes

lryrics?
vocals?
great musicans?
great songwriters?
an ability to write good songs over a long period of time?
unique?
original?
pioneering?
great performers?

the beatles dont tick the top 2 boxes and maybe the 3rd one is debatable.......so i really struggle to see how they can be classed as the best band ever

lyrics?

I have always said and still say that lyrics are the least important part of a song. The melody and general structure of the song are far more important, obviously if you have a good melody and good song structure coupled with good lyrics it makes a good song even better, but lyrics aren't the be all and end all. The fact that the beatles' songs have shit lyrics doesn't mean a thing to me, because they were all about the melody and the harmonies, and for those reasons, that is why the beatles' songs were so catchy. I think it's why people find themselves (and don't deny it cool kids) singing or humming naughty pop tunes like cheryl cole (which has been my subconscious song of choice today), because of the melody

i know youve always said this danny

but lyrics are important

for me the melody and structure gets you in,but the lyrics take you deeper.

a good melody with bad lyrics for me is like eating chips without salt and vinegar...........yeah it may taste ok but it dont COMPLETELY satisfy

if my 12 year old neice wrote these lyrics fair enough, but the best band ever? surely not

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Someone to love,
Somebody new.
Someone to love,
Someone like you.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.

Love, love me do.
You know I love you,
I'll always be true,
So please, love me do.
Whoa, love me do.
Yeah, love me do.
Whoa, oh, love me do.

its a well known fact in music circles that the beatles lyrics were dumb.

to me its obvious they just put lyrics to most of the songs that meant nothing.....just to fill the spaces

not all of them, but most

anyway im bored now arguing the most obvious arguement of all time that "the beatles were actually not perfect"

But you keep referencing early Beatles, there later stuff had so much more depth.

And I debate this bad vocal arguement, all fantastic tone and character.

Oh yeah, IŽll tell you something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

Oh, please, say to me
You'll let me be your man
and please, say to me

You'll let me hold your hand
Now let me hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

And when I touch you i feel happy, inside
It's such a feeling
That my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide

Yeah you, got that something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand

And when I touch you I feel happy, inside
It's such a feeling
That my love
I can't hide
I can't hide
I can't hide

Yeah you, got that something
I think you'll understand
When I say that something
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your hand
I wanna hold your ha-a-a-a-a-a-and

another inspirational song there! - Bob all the way!

Lyrics are everything, otherwise the feeling and scouting for girls are AMAZING bands purely because they have very hummable tunes.

Beatles are decent and that but if you played me a random beatles song theres probably a 50/50 chance i'd like it, surely not good enough for a best band ever

Beatles are the only band to go from a poppy boy band to a decent rock n roll band and do it well. Plus they opened so many doors for later bands.

bob introduced reggae....well done but not enough

never said bad vocals.......i think they can both hold tunes of course

but neither lennon or mcartney had soul in their voice.....thats why most decent beatles covers with great singers piss on the originals....

eg joe cocker - with a little help from my friends

lennon and mcartney = limited vocal ranges, no power, no soul, no moments in their songs send shivers down my spine cause they lack the ability to move you, yes they can sing in tune and decently i agree

they are both 7/10 singers
